Dell Poweredge 4300
 

My company just picked up a Dell Poweredge 4300 dual PIII 450 system. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone had any problems getting a Linux Distro to run on it? Only reason I ask is because we have a Proliant 1600 that we never were able to load a Linux OS on.

I have a Poweredge 4300 running FC3 with no problems. Installation went without a hitch.

I have a Dell Poweredge 4300 Dual 550 server. The System is SCSI and boots up, recognizes states that SCSI ID 7 is the host adapter, but then I get a message of 'SCSI BIOS not installed.'

I need to find a SCSI BIOS to install and
install a Linux version.

Here's the set up.

Dell Poweredge 4300 that has been upgraded to dual PIII 550
Dual PIII 550 With SCSI Backplane, NIC card, 4-9.1 Gig Hard drives, Hot swap, Floppy, and CD Drive.

I believe, don't quote me yet, that our server says the same thing on boot.

If I remember correctly, all we did was go into the Hard Disk Configuration and set to hardware raid 5. Then put in Fedora Core 1 boot CD. After installation, it still says "SCSI BIOS not installed" but we are not using the disks in a SCSI configuration so we don't care bout SCSI BIOS. I'll check next time we reboot to make sure, but I am almost 100% certain.

Talk about bringing up an old post, lol.

I'm looking into making this a RAID mirror to one other disk.

Do you know if this system is upgradeable to dual 1 Ghz or 1.5 Ghz?

Anyone else have some suggestions, I would appreciate it.

I am experiencing the same issue when trying to upgrade to FC5 with the same server configuration. So what is the solution to the problem??

We just came into two poweredge 4300 servers at work and had the same problem. Dell quit updating the BIOS, so it is an old style and shows each SCSI bus separately. The last SCSI bus on boot is the one that controls the HD's. You should press cntrl+M to set up your RAID configuration. We were able to install Fedora 4, but not Fedora 5. Fedora 5 did not include the SCSI driver that we needed.

I also have a dell PowerEdge 4300
when i got the machine i had to go into the bios and tell the system to scan imbedded devices first i still get the scsi bios not installed but it boots with out having to hit the F1 key

the only real problem i am having is getting the OS ( Ubuntu ) to recognize the second processor

Although I see this thread is getting old I thought I would mention that I just installed Debian Lenny on a PE4300 I just picked up and everything works GREAT!!

Nope, 550mhz are the highest. IMO the power needed to run it verses the computing power is just not worth it flip the switch.
