Dell Poweredge 2550 /Debian Lenny Install using PERC 5i RAID
I have never installed on a machine with hardware RAID and very much want to install Debian Lenny on this machine as a home server at my house. It has 4 73gB SCSI drives. How do I configure containers? How do I install on this server using RAID 1? Once I can get past the configuration of the RAID controller and understand how it fits in with partman during installation, I feel I could get this installed and up and running. Thank you.

Hello, a hardware raid makes all the raid mechanisms by itself. Meaqns when the raid is configured properly, and when the kernel detects the raid chip, it provides a nominal scsi disc. In your case this has to be /dev/sda. You can test this by booting a live cd and investigating the kernel messages with dmesg. There should be a line for detecting the raid chip, and the for assigning a disc device....

When you boot the server there should be a screen that says hit CTRL+Something to enter RAID config. you would enter that and configure the Disks for the array how you want them(RAID 1, RAID 5, etc..). Afterwards the OS would see each configured array as a single physical drive.

DISK 0 + Disk 1 as a RAID 1 = /dev/sda

Disk 2 + Disk 3 + Disk 4 as RAID 5 = /dev/sdb

The drive naming scheme may be slightly different (it can vary for some controllers) but the general idea is there.

( ^^ basically rehashing what inside man already said.)

Don't forget to check out Dells Linux storage page for more info on the PERC controllers in Linux and what management tools are available.
