Dell Latitude cpx-j - No Ubuntu?

Hi,
I have an older Dell Latitude cpx-j. Laptop works fine as I've installed WIN98, 2K and XP w/o a problem.
I went to install Unbuntu 7.10. The splash screen came up and I chose to install (which I know should bring me to the live CD version). After a minute or 2, I get a bunch of errors which end off with a kernel panic and something not synching (I can get the specific errors if you need).
My question, though, is this. Will Ubuntu 7.10 run on an older laptop? After a little searching of the posts here, it seems that it won't. (I tried installing the server version...the actual install went fine, but I could not boot into the OS).
If 7.10 will not work, which flavor/version of Linux do you suggest I run?

XUBUNTU for older onces, or FreeBSD or for easier use DestopBSD
but if we had some kind of errors log, reports and you would post them we maybe could help you.
There are several install options you could use at the "Install prompt" of the Ubuntu install.
