Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Post Debian xf86config

I have just installed Debian and I am having some problems
with my xf86config file. When I give the startx command I
get the typical errors from a non-functional x server. I have
ran xf86config quite a few times and nothing. I have an
sis 740 but none of the distros seems to support it. I
typically just set up my card as a generic VESA but I can't
find it on the list in xf86config. It asks me if I want to
look at the card database, I say yes, and then under the
generic section there is only generic vga which I have tried
and does not work. Where can I find the generic VESA option
and how else can I fix my system?
Thanks,

do you have xf86cfg?

you could also edit your config file to change
the module name to vesa_drv
