I have installed Etch on many PCs using SATA drives, including this one:

(Though the current release is "Lenny/Sid", the initial install was Etch.) However, I have seen enough problems reported that I think they may be problems with certain configurations (hardware array?). Check your BIOS settings for alternative SATA recognition options.

The same here, i installed Debian Etch on my Intel 945GZ motherboard. It should be no problem at all.
