Debian not "loading" kernel module for graphics card

I have a second graphics card in my computer, it's an older amd card- an amd rage XL. From what I can find googling, I need the "r128" driver.
I have installed the appropriate package, have the module loaded, but lspci -v still shows the card using the kernel module "atyfb".
The "Device" section for the card's xorg file has
Code:
Driver "r128"
but no go.

If anyone knows what steps to try, or if I'm just trying the wrong driver, let me know please

having 2 gpu's is tricky business.
i doubt it's not enough to just install another driver.

first of all you need to clarify what you want to achieve.
