Debian 6 on IBM x3500 doesn't recognize hard drives
Hello,
I just got a IBM x3500 server. Nice server, but when I boot Debian 6 netinst to the partitioner, it complains about not having a hard drive. It does have 8 hard drives set up in a hardware RAID controller for RAID10. So I selected the scsi-sas driver and it said it saw a hard drive but could not partition it. Did I choose the wrong driver or am I missing something here? Thanks! --techningeer |
I would assume that Debian 6 is simply to old for this fairly new hardware, i would try it with a Debian Wheezy or other recent distros.

Debian 6 AKA Squeeze is the Stable version. Think that Wheezy would work?
|
Debian 6 is nearly two years old, Wheezy is already in the frozen state for quite a while, so it should be released soon (soon in Debian terms). Wezzy come with the much more modern 3.2 kernel, so chances that it works are far higher than with Squeeze. I would at least give it a try.

Okay, I might give it a try. I just don't like the 3.2 kernel, but maybe it will work better on this newer machine. Just curious, is it possible to run Wheezy with a 2.6 kernel?
|
If the 2.6 kernel does not support your hardware, what would be the point? Besides that, the only difference between 2.6 kernels and 3.x kernels is the new naming system. technically they are the same (besides from better hardware support and more functions in drivers in newer kernels, as usual).

Tried Wheezy. Didn't work. It keeps trying to load aacraid which is the wrong driver. I loaded ips and it still did not work. It is a IBM ServeRaid 8K controller. Any ideas? I got a 2.4 kernel to load on it using ips but 2.6 and 3.2 wont.
