Dead PSU?
 

ok, crappy day for me today. wake up at 5am with some nasty virus

spent the last 7 hours or so repeating 5am's bathroom event

AND NOW MY POOTER WON'T START!!!!

i'm guessing it's a screwed up PSU. The mobo was somewhat dusty and i brushed it dowen with a pasty brush but that did no good. all i get is a half second spin of the three fans, psu, cpu and that other little one... and then it dies again. removed drives and card and nothing... this has happened a few times over the lastg few days, but it always worked 2nd... currently on the 29.5th go and still nothing, just a tiny spin up and dead. anyone think it mightn't be the psu? it is pretty dusty... wonder what the chances of ghetting in there and de dusting that would be.. reckon it'd

... work. :D and typing this in lynx which won't properly fit the screen.. so it reads awful.

Did you spill water on it ? ;)

I would guess its the psu, well at least that is where I would start myself.

Did you check to make certain that every fan works on its own and its not just the motherboard acting cagey over no tac reading? If they spin a little still doesn't mean the mobo got the right response. I had to do this once with cracking open an old P1 and plugging in my various Athy 1.2 fans (without bothering to unmount them from the athy case), finally tracked it to a dead cpu fan that kicked a little, but then would just stop dead, after trying the 3 case fans first :rolleyes:

Got a spare ATX PSU to try? Bummer man, Luck.

Hey Acid, I bought a super nice enemax psu and connected it to a supernice abit mobo but I had similar problems. it turns out that the connection to the mobo was (is) touchy. So long as the psu mobo power connector is not pushed on too hard it works fine.

Don't know if this is the same as your prob though...

hmm, well i'm back up and running now.. phew that was awful !! :D

i think the actual problem was a dodgy kettle socket on the psu, cos i found if i kept jiggling the lead it did stay on.. i guess the psu was charging the capacitors intermittenly while it was turned off... but without a constant connection when it was turned on the capactiors instabntly ran out of steam. I *think* that was what was happeneing, but i never really got a chance to find out tho, as i only found this jiggling effect to work when i had the case of and the psu circuits unscrewed.. so mid jiggle a solder joint shorted and blew the entire fuse to pieces, glass n all. tried fitting another one.. but i think i then managed to blow up the psu switch itself.. so i just gave up and bought a new one. ahh well. only got one lot of 240v through me tho.... not bad :)

pulled the entire system apart to get to the bottom of it and on reassmebling found X failing.. tracked it down to the ethernet card in the end.. think it's ok now... not tried getting smb and nfs back up yet tho..... anyway.... RAHHHHHHHHH
