data corruption when cp'ing files across sata disks!!

hi everybody,
last day i decided to resize my home partition as to make it fill up my whole sata disk... i moved all my data to another disk, repartitioned the previous disk, and moved all my data back... trust me when i say I wish i had never come up with that stupid idea, i don't know wtf happened but all my data got corrupted!! my pictures, movies, mp3, pdf's... all seem to have been affected by some subtle form of corruption... after some testing i indeed noticed this doesn't seem to happen when copying data "within" the same disk... I hope somebody can give me a clue as to least understand what's going on with my hardware, my data is now lost but an advice not to make this happen in the future would be greatly appreciated! do you think i hit a bug in the sata kernel module?

Several early S-ATA controller revisions have been plagued with problems like these. The sil3112 (as included on many nforce2-based motherboards) is one of these and it requires a BIOS upgrade to prevent this data corruption from happening. The libata drivers in the kernel are considered stable so they should not be a point of concern.

Did you reboot after changing the partitions?
The Linux kernel goes havoc when you don't reboot, because it will keep the old partition data in memory and use them instead of the new ones.

Many thanks for your replies gents, what else could I say but WTF, you mean these dickheads would ship mobos plagued by this issue and then, when they saw it fit, released some "patch"? I can't believe it, really, is this supposed to be a joke?! I am so pissed off I could spit nails, here is who I am to say thanks to for losing all my data: ABIT and their crap. Now, lemme guess, I'll bet my ass in order to update that BIOS I'm gonna need Windows and one some half-assed utility they provide, isn't it?

Sorry gents but I am simply mad at these boneheads. Unbelievable, I paid 200€ back then for this mobo and what I ended up with is a piece of trash which can't even copy data across two sata disks properly. I'd better end my rant here before i get banned. One more entry to add to my hardware manufacturers blacklist: ABIT. Regards, andre *shakes head*
