Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

D945gsejt nic

I am investigating the Intel D945GSEJT motherboard. It is planned to be used as a replacement for the D945GCLF2 which we have been successful with. I am happy with its performance for my application when running under Ubuntu 9.04 but am having issues with Puppy 4.2.1.

I am having setup issues with the Realtek NIC card when running under Puppy Linux 4.2.1. When using the Network wizard it reports puppy was able to find a live network. But when I configure interface to Auto DHCP it tells me I am successful but the assigned IP address is not that as expected (outside of gateway/DNS address).

For instance under Ubuntu it assigns an IP of 192.168.2.250. Under Puppy it assigns 169.254.170.220. My gateway is 192.168.2.1.

Most motherboards I have worked with have been easy to configure. Is anyone aware of any issues that may be causing this.

Thanks

That IP address basically means it cannot see the router at all and the computer has assigned itself a dummy IP address. Try configuring it manually. Do you have DHCP software installed? Some distros don't come with DHCP client software built-in. I had to install DHCPCD on my machine before I could use DHCP.

The odd thing about it is that I have installed Puppy 4.2.1 on another Intel board ( D945GCLF2 ) where it is assigned a propper IP.

The NIC hardware I belive is working prorperly on the D945GSEJT since it works under Ubuntu.

I am not sure if Puppy 4.2.1 has a DHCP client built in but as mentioned earlier Puppy 4.2.1 runs the NIC properly on the other Intel boards.

In doing some research I came across a blog ( http://jonashagmar.blogspot.com/2009...nap-turbo.html ) that indicates that a wrong module (r8169) loads (in a Debian installation). There were directions to load the correct module (r8168) but this does not appear applicable to Puppy Linux. If it is the case that an incorrect module is loading under Puppy is there anyone that can suggest direction?

Thank you
