D-Link DFM-560EL analog modem won't run in Mandrake 8.2
I recently installed an external D-Link analog modem (DFM-560EL) on my linux box (Mandrake 8.2/2.4.18-6mdk). The problem is that although linux detects it, it won't go past initialization. In other words, it won't dial.
Is there anything that I can do to remedy this?
Thanks.

I have the same problem right now... I'm using the same modem, albeit with a newer version of the distro... I have MDK 9.1... I have already tried RH 9.0 but it still has the same problem, so definitely it isn't an issue with the distro...
Something's funny though... in KPPP, the ATI field in the modem query dialog doesn't display any string...

thanks, ron. somebody advised me earlier to switch to mandrake 9.2. i dunno if that will help, and i doubt it. right now i'll just look for a linux driver for that modem before switching to the newer distro.

It might be driver related indeed... Let's try that... If I get anything to work, I'll just post it here...

I installed Windoze and dumped all modem messages to modemlog.txt and I found out that it sent this init string to the modem:
AT&FE0V1&D2&C1S0=0
I removed windows and installed RH 9.0 again, and placed this in the init string field of the modem configuration... guess what, I'm posting this message using RH 9.0, connected to the internet using my DFM-560EL modem!

how to dump...
well, i tried that in mandrake 8.2 but still got no response. will try that again after i installed mandrake 9.2 or redhat 9.0, sometime next week. i looked earlier for those two distros this morning but i guess it haven't arrived here in manila yet. thanks dude, and merry christmas!
asklepios, if you wanna check your modem log in windows, double click on your modem icon in the control panel. you will see the modem properties. highlight your modem then click on the properties button. this will bring up your modem's properties. click on the connections tab then click on the advanced button. you will see the view log button. click on it and you will see the AT command strings used by your modem.

thanx a lot mikeangelo73 for that explanation but seems that my motorola modem will not work.
since both of you are using a D-Link modem i think it is on topic. i found a modem D-Link DFM 560ES.
it says that it is compatible with SCO Linux and Linux but in Standard mode. do you guys know what this standard mode is?
secondly it says that it is compatile with DOS 6.X.X but my search has told me that for a modem to work well with Linux it should be compatible with DOS 3.1 so do you people think that it will be a okay choice?
i know i m being really n00b but this problem has left me absolutely stunned and i m not thinking straight. please help me and tell me whether it will work or not

The 560ES is a winmodem (software/HSF modem), unlike the 560EL which is a full analog modem... If you would notice, it is noted in the 560ES's page that it uses the Conexant chipset... It is supported in Linux ( www.linmodems.org, www.linuxant.com), though I would recommend that you stay away from these...
I'm not really sure what they meant by standard mode, since it was noted in Linuxant's site that features such asDigital Call Progress (which is a nonstandard feature in Conexant modems) is already supported...
By the way, you could check in Linmodems.Org if your motorola modem is supported or not... If you could find out a way to make it work from there, then you won't need to spend money in buying another modem...

I got 7 CDs (1 Documentation, 3 Install CDs, 3 Source CDs)... It's the Personal Edition that I have... shrink-wrapped, complete with the manuals, RHN subscription, plus the complimentary stickers...
Some guys subscribed to PLUG ( http://plug.linux.org.ph) distribute CDs... maybe you could try contacting them and have the CDs burned for you... some charge for it, some don't...

no problem, man...
by the way, about the modem settings... try changing the init command from ATZ to AT... the one sent before AT&FE0V1&D2&C1S0=0... I noticed in the logs (in windoze) that instead of the usual ATZ, the modem init command sent was just that... not sure why it was done that way, but you might as well try it... just wanted to help...
