D-Link DBT-120 becomes nonresponsive

I have a B3 DBT-120. I bought it because I have had good luck with them in the past and they are small and don't hang out like some other dongles. My laptop is running Gentoo and bluez. Periodically the dongle just quits. Or it gets stuck in send or receive according to the graphic on IceWM. When this happens eventually it will become nonresponsive. I have to pull and reinsert the dongle....And this does not keep it from doing it again. Methinks the wrong module is loaded but I can't remember which module to load..... Note this is while using pppd and rfcomm.
