CUPS test page and plain text prints, all else garbage

Hey

I got a new printer today, a Brother MFC 7860DW, and want to use it as a network printer.

I installed it (on Slackware) from the cupswrapperMFC7860DW-2.0.4-2.i386.deb and mfc7860dwlpr-2.1.0-1.i386.deb from the Brother website. To install I extracted the files, copied them manually, ran /usr/local/Brother/Printer/MFC7860DW/cupswrapper/cupswrapperMFC7860DW-2.0.4 , and added the printer in localhost:631

The cups test page prints perfectly, and also if I print a plain text file it works, but if I print a PDF or a webpage with Firefox or something with LibreOffice - I get pages of garbage.

Does anyone have any ideas please? This is Slackware 13.37 with cups 1.4.6, some more files:

Code:
$ cat /etc/printcap
# This file was automatically generated by cupsd(8) from the
# /etc/cups/printers.conf file. All changes to this file
# will be lost.
7860DW|Brother MFC-7860DW:rm=legrand-sw:rp=7860DW:
Test7860DW|:rm=legrand-sw:rp=Test7860DW:

$ cat /etc/cups/printers.conf
cat: /etc/cups/printers.conf: Permission non accordée
andrei@legrand-sw:~$ sudo cat /etc/cups/printers.conf

Could it be that brlpdwrapperMFC7860DW is not working correctly? But how come the cups page prints? I wonder what format that cups test page is in, probably not raw?

This is a little sad, I spent some hours shopping for a printer that would work in Linux

Thanks in advance

Actually I am no longer able to print plain text either. CUPS test page still prints OK though.

What a bother..

Yeah looks like a strange problem. I have found a temporary solution, you can read about it here: http://littlesvr.ca/linux-stuff/arti...-slackware.php

Basically there is an unknown problem using the Brother drivers on Slackware and you have to use the generic ppd.
