Question cups server cannot be contacted


I am running ubuntu breezy 5.1 and have been going along fine, except for my printer. I cannot open the cups server. I get the following error.
Code:
root@ubuntu:~# gnome-cups-manager

** (gnome-cups-manager:9646): WARNING **: IPP request failed with status 1280

** (gnome-cups-manager:9646): WARNING **: IPP request failed with status 1280
when i run lsusb, i get the following
Code:
crowell@ubuntu:/$ lsusb
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 03f0:7104 Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 3420c
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Any help would be appreciated

You shouldn't need to run gnome-cups-manager as root or from the command line.
Launch it from the System/Admin menu as user.

It's always worked OK for me this way.

when i do it that way, I get a popup saying "The CUPS server could not be contacted"

Hmmm.

Try the following...

sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

Then try the cups-manager again.

If that fails, make sure cups is installed.

error still occurs,
I then apt-(got?) the cupsys still wont work

Please. I would really like to get my printer up asap, as i need it for school.

Curious.

Have you tried the Ubuntu Forums?
