I have a fresh install of Slackware 14.1. Currently setup with no users other than root and no password for root. CUPS demands a user name and password and will not accept "root" and no password. If I configure a password, can I get rid of it after I install my printer? Please don't give me all the reasons I should have a second user and passwords, I've heard them all and I don't want them.
PS Any other way to install a printer without CUPS? I have a Samsung ML-1630 and am using Fluxbox.

SpliX is a set of CUPS printer drivers for SPL (Samsung Printer Language) printers. If you have such a printer, you need to download and use SpliX. Moreover you will find documentation about this proprietary language.
Many Linux distributions ship SpliX already so that you do not need to compile and install it by yourself.
The SpliX driver will usually get assigned automatically to the supported printers. You get also pre-built distribution-independent LSB-based packages of SpliX on OpenPrinting. With these you can get SpliX onto any Linux machine without needing to compile.
I don't see any Linux drivers for the ML-1630 on that link you gave
I see them, just have to navigate manuals & downloads, drivers and have for Windows Linux and Mac. I have never used a Samsung printer before, so your option might be an easier option.
