CTRL+click, SHIFT+click no longer selecting multiple items

Not sure if this is hardware or software issue. I have a Micro Innovations keyboard. I run Ubuntu 6.10 with GNOME. Recently it does not allow me to select multiple items, such as in a file list, with CTRL+click and SHIFT+click. What could be causing this?

Quick and easy

If you create a new user
and log into gnome does it continue?

if yes The is a keyboard fault
tap/loosen every key

if no the you've managed to disable the feature in gnome somehow
