Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Creative sb extigy

Hi Everybody:

I've been using Linux for about 6 months (I don't use windows anymore, I've found all windows's equivalent applications within the linux world) and I don't have any sort of big problem here with my box, almost everything working like a charm, except a small and strange problem that I've been facing with sound issues concerning my external USB Sound Blaster Extigy sound card that during booting time insists in make my computer freezes at module dependencies line.

I've already simulated this problem with the system alredy loaded, pluging it in my computer, but the whole system freezes, what makes me to reboot the computer by force. In order to get rid of this problem I had to insert in etc/rc.d/rc.local file the following line: "modprobe audio", at least with audio module loaded, if I plug the external soundcard with the system already loaded it recognizes Extigy as being a USB device and launching XMMS with OSS Driver plugin and USB Audio Class Driver as audio device I get it working smoothly. (during booting time I have to turn off the device otherwise the system hangs).

I'm very satisfied with my box, the fact of having to turn off the external sound card to allow the system to load properly is not a problem for me. The only annoying side of this is the fact that applications that uses sound, doesn't recognize my USB sound card. For the whole system the sound card seems to be my on board one, only XMMS (after Audio I/O Plugins configurations) accepts Extigy. Applications like mplayer, xine, real player and games use my internal sound card as being the default one.

I'm running MDK 9.1, kernel 2.4.21-0, on a Desktop Compaq Evo D510, with an on board ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller, loading i810_audio module (harddrake information), alsa sound version 0.9.0 (comes with Mandy 9.1) is unabled and I've alredy disabled the on board sound card in BIOS (but it seems the system insists in putting it to work, otherwise while playing games I wouldn't have any sort of sound), and tried to compile Cochran's exaudio driver (without success).

After writing this book, I would like to post 2 questions;
1 ) Why do I have do load audio module manually to avoid system freezes? (etc/rc.d/rc.local). At least I can listen to some music!!
2 ) How to enable EXTIGY for the whole system? I would like to play games, watch movies, etc with this sound card. What do I miss?

Thanks for the comments and help, sorry for the long report and all the best for you.

PS: here goes the loaded modules (lsmod) and my etc/modules.conf

I would go ALSA. You want to get rid of any OSS lines in modules.con ( like alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio) the upgrade your ALSA packages to 0.9.8 and then fix your modules.conf to how they have it for your card on www.alsa-project.org ....
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...dule=usb-audio

~~~~~
Do you have SPDIF out on your onboard sound? If you do, i would disconnect the extigy from the computer and send the SPDIF out to the extigy ... i believe this way you may get real 24bit sound ( i know for certain you will only get 16 through the USB 1.1 )
I've downloaded alsa CVS and at least the system is not freezing anymore during booting time (with extigy plugged and turned on), but unforntunately I have no sound comming from speakers.
Alredy checked volume in aumix and enabled alsa services, but no success.
any ideas?
