create new partition on existing hdd live?


i have created a partition /dev/sda1, mount as / and /dev/sda2 as swap. the whole hdd device has free space. could we create /dev/sda3 without rebooting into single user mode using parted, fdisk, etc?

/dev/sda: 10g
/dev/sda1: 5g
/dev/sda2: 1g
new addition
/dev/sda3: 4g

pls kindly advise.

Yes, you can do this multiuser, as root.

Hi,

Yes, you can create additional partitions on your system as root. You can use 'cfdisk' or 'fdisk'.

You have 2 primary partitions left to create. If you make your 3rd primary with enough space for your needs then I would suggest that you create a extended for the forth with the rest of the space. You can only have 4 primary partitions so by creating a extended partition instead of a primary you can then create numerous logical partitions within that.

Of course you could create the extended partition for the 3rd to create more logical partitions within it.

If that's really a 10GB harddrive, the best thing to do would be replace it. That size of drive is obsolete by MANY years and it is therefore quite likely that it is getting worn out and could fail at any time. For not much over $50, you can get ten times the space, and possibly avoid an unpleasant failure.
