crazy uncooperative infuriating laptop cd-burner

I'm using Red Hat 8.0 and I have a Dell Latitude L400 laptop with an external cd-burner (dell part #7D655-A00) that uses what appears to be a SCSI connection to my laptop.

When i boot linux, it detects the burner as /dev/hdc for some reason and grub has the argument hdc=ide-scsi...

However, when I use xcdroast it says there are no burners detected.
Previously, when running RH7.3, eroaster also could not find any cd-burners.

First, why is it mounted as /dev/hdc? Shouldn't it be mounted as /dev/sda or something?

Second, what the heck is going on? How I can fix this?

Please help!!

It should read as /dev/scd0 or /dev/sr0, assuming no other scsi devices on the system, and as its a laptop I'm probably right... probably er, yeah.

Does "dmesg" have a scsi device scan listed? If so paste it back here.

Also, does RH see the drives existence at all? Can you at least use it as a read device?

Cheers,

Strangely, this problem fixed itself when i upgraded to cdrecord 2.0 series (from 1.3) and xcdroast-98-alpha13. It appears to be treating the cd-burner as hdc and working fine that way... very odd.
dmesg and cdrecord -scanbus never gave positive results for finding anything, but the newest xcdroast detected it.
