My system:
Fedora (2.6.40-4.fc15.i686)
Dell Inspiron 6400

After i try to safe remove my external hard drives( AData portable 500 GB, WD 1TB - My Book Esential ), suddenly my system crashed and display shows some thing like log or codes.

Did you unmount it first?

Does /var/log/syslog a show anything from the time of the crash?

There is no thing in my syslog, and no any reported bug in system.

Always i used safe remove option and there was no problem but now its some different.
But if i reject it first and then safe remove it from disk utility, every thing will be good and no any problem.

I have a similar experience with may portable hard drive in Win 7.
Does can bad sector cause this?

And i can't find unmount option!

The terminal command is "umount." Nobody knows what happened to the missing "n." If there is an "Unmount" option in the file manager, it invokes the umount command.

You might also check /var/log/dmesg (my Fedora is rusty).

I don't think a bad sector could cause this and, frankly, I've never encountered it in Windows or Linux. I guess I've been lucky. The worst I've done by forgetting the unmount or "safely remove" a device is scrambled a file on the removable drive.

When I used the same search string ("remove removable drive crash linux") substituting "fedora" for "linux," nothing useful seemed to turn up in the three or four pages of results.

I'm afraid I don't have any other ideas.

This is a new problem and i will learn new things around it

In dmesg was some other log for my internal hard drive, i can't find any thing about sdab or sdac(my external partition).

And what does " maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended " mean?

That is how I like to approach problems, though sometimes it is a difficult attitude to maintain.

Many distros install with a setting automatically to check disks on boot after X number of restarts. My guess (and it's just a guess) is that message is a result of that option's falling due.

If the last number of the relevant line in your fstab is set to 1, automatic disk check is enabled. (Source: http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html)

i meet same problem. it crash again and again when i remove a external disk from my t420.

is it caused by new kernel 2.6.40?
