CPU usage problems
Recently my laptop has been acting weird while playing the most simple flash games or watching a video. PIC
As you can see on the pic, every 3ish minutes, my computer moves to 100% cpu usage and somehow makes the core temperatures drop. This makes it impossible for me to do anything. My computer is ultra laggy for about 10 seconds. Then after that, it is normal again. My normal core temperatures are about 50 degrees, but when I play a game or watch a video it goes up to 90 degrees. My 5 year old computer: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Memory: 2.9 GiB (Only 21% of this is used.) Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU T6670 @ 2.20GHz × 2 Graphics: Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset x86/MMX/SSE2 OS type: 32-bit Disk: 240.6 GB If anyone could help me solve my problem, it would be highly appreciated. |
you should also look at the process list, what is on the top

This is while watching a youtube video and playing an internet flash game (Just to show it also happens when doing that). |
Flash has always been problematic on Linux, especially regarding high CPU usage.
I believe your problem lies in a sub-optimal CPU cooling, especially if it arose during other CPU-intensive jobs like long compilations etc. If you didn't do this already, you should blow away dust from your laptop fans (with the laptop switched off, of course) and slits as that can help your CPU to remain cooler. |
^ That seems to have solved it! Thank you very much. This is how it looks like now: PIC Almost a drop of 20 degrees :)
For people who have the same problem this might help you: Do some research on underclocking. You can change your setting on your laptop with cpufreq. Get rid of the dust on your laptop fans. |
