CPU overheating?

I have just upgraded to Mandrake 10.1 Official from 9.2. Whenever I download more than say 20 or 30 emails or whenever I use the find command. I get the following mesaage popping up from "Kwrited - Listening on Device /dev/pts/0"

quote
Message from syslogd@localhost at Wed Nov 17 19:57:12 2004 ...
localhost kernel: CPU0: Temperature above threshold

Message from syslogd@localhost at Wed Nov 17 19:57:12 2004 ...
localhost kernel: CPU0: Running in modulated clock mode

I am using Evolution as my email client (if that makes any difference). How serious is this problem? What should I do about it? I never had this problem with Mandrake 9.2.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Bill Dika

Thanks for the reply Joey but I'm not sure what code I should run to get the temperature of my CPU.

Thanks Joey but this is what I get:

quote
[root@localhost dad]# sensors
bash: sensors: command not found
[root@localhost dad]# find / -name sensors -print
/lib/modules/2.4.27-0.pre2.1mdk/kernel/drivers/sensors
[root@localhost dad]# /lib/modules/2.4.27-0.pre2.1mdk/kernel/drivers/sensors
bash: /lib/modules/2.4.27-0.pre2.1mdk/kernel/drivers/sensors: is a directory
[root@localhost dad]#
quote

and when I ls the sensors directory there is no sensors file?

Bill Dika

check your BIOS to make shure that your M/B supports temp. monitoring.

You have to have lm_sensors installed and working before the sensors command will give any info. This in itself can be difficult, sorry to say. (See plenty of threads in LQ about the issue.)

You can just logout and reboot, going into the BIOS settings during the reboot, to read the temperature of the CPU there, as a stopgap measure. At least you would know then if you're getting a false alarm or if the CPU really is too hot.

Google will result in finding a reference for manufacturers' stated maximum operating temperatures for CPU chips.

You're welcome! And when Mdk 10.1 Official Edition becomes downloadable to the public probably in a week or week and a half, you might want to go to that--they have fixed things that needed fixing in version 10.0.

Or you may be able to get updates right now using urpmi that will give you the equivalent.
