cpu/motherboard recommendation

i was looking into building a new computer and was wondering what kind of cpu/motherboard match-ups people recently made. my computer will be used for animation, photoshop, and other programs along that line. i have seen many sites, most which seem pretty outdated, for picking a cpu and motherboard. id like to hear your opinions.

The only tips I have are:

1) Check out the reader reviews at for stuff. Linux users are pretty good about saying good or bad for linux.

2) Check out the HCL here at LQ for hardware compatibility.

3) For motherboards, Intel chipsets are pretty well supported. I'm sure there are other well supported chipsets as well.

My semi-recent combination (Sept 2006) was an Abit IL8 motherboard and an Intel P4 531 Prescott. Works well for Battle for Wesnoth, MythTV, email server, web server, general purpose desktop, and some Kino video editing. Can't say much about photoshopping or animation...

Just built a new machine with a Gigabyte 965p-ds3 MoB, core 2 duo e6420, 2x1Gb of G.skill pc6400 memory, pny fx-7300gt 256 pcie graphics card, WD-250Gb sata drive and a Lite-on sata DVD combo burner. Running Sabayon 3.3 (full not mini) distro. Also installed PCLinux 2007 with no problems. Only minor issue is with the Gigabyte lan and Mepis 6.5.

Unit runs very!!! fast with stock cooler and no OC. My old system was p-4 1.6Ghz with minor OC.

Updating BIOS in linux is a bit tricky. I used Wine to create BIOS flash file for install directly from the BIOS.

Good luck on your new build.
