Unhappy CPU context corrupt and CRC error

I'm running Red Hat 8.0 on a 1.1 GHz athlon, 256 mb memory, and an 80 gig ATA 100 HD. I've been running linux for about 6 weeks on this system and havn't had any problems until recently. While trying to compile large programs like xine and mplayer I am getting a kernel panic: CPU context corrupt. Also my system has been much less stable and it seems that when I leave it alone for long periods of time it will restart on it's own and when I come back to it, it will say crc error system halted.

I've been trying to figure out what the problem is and I think it is probably a hardware problem. It seems that the crc errors are a problem with the hard drive, and the CPU context corrupt kernel panics are due to memory, CPU, or maybe the hard drive.

Is there any way I can pinpoint what the problem is? I don't have extra hardware that I can swap in and out.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Eric Olson
