i'm looking to buy an internal cdwriter, and first things first its got run in my favourite os. Has anyone bought a writer recently? I'm hoping (probably in vain) that there are manufacturers that support linux. I don't mind what make it is, as long as its cheap and cheerful.
I use Mandrake 9.1 and a LG 'GCE-8520B'. I tried a Samsung SW248 first but it didn't work. The LG was about 65.00 at Walmart. No problems since. The Samsung was a headache. It may be my particular hardware though. Just a thought for you. Buy where you can swap if it don't work. Nothing worse than a drive that don't work and you're stuck with it.
Am I a lunatic if I presume that whatever Plextor Plexwriter runs smoothly in Linux redhat 9.0. It costed 120 euros and arrives at wednesday...something can still be done if I am wrong with my selection...
Many thanks for your efforts, I checked the http://www.linuxcompatible.org/comp...&sort=All&idx=p and plextor was O.K., but there is no any data of the latest models. However the older models do work and are recommended. Maybe the latest models work also, but you never know, because its different drive and will also work a little differently.
Actually Plextor *should* be the state of the art writer, but it helps nothing if it is incompatible with Linux.
Title/Device Working Date
Plextor PlexWriter 16/10/40A (Plextor) Yes Linux 08/02 Details
Plextor 40/12/40 USB 2.0 (Plextor) Yes Linux 05/03 Details
I second the DVD burner! I'm drooling over a few right now, and wish I had an extra 300 bux lying around.
As for one that works with linux...
(I'm sure I'll be corrected on the incorrect portions of this)
Linux uses scsi-emulation for nearly all it's IDE burners. If you get an IDE burner, chances are VERY good that it will work in linux through this generic scsi interface. It's a common ground for uncommon hardware to gather and converse
Basically, you should be fine with **just about** anything you can find out there.
O.K. I am perhaps too pessimistic, but I simply couldn't get my HP 9100i to work. Well.. I could make firmware upgrade but its so difficult. I should have NT 4 or Windows 98 for that. I do not have both of them...I threw them to carbage can long time ago. :-) Besides...those firmware upgrades should be possible to make with some flash DOS, making firmware upgrqade with Windows sounds too risky. Stupid, very stupid upgrade.
I have also sony CD-R DRIVE!! It rocks!! Really longlasting and exellent reader. Only once I have had reading problem, but maybe it was caused by a bad burning.
