Corrupted/Messed Partitions, Cant delete volume/create/modify!!
I have a dual boot system-- Linux Mint 14 and Windows 7.(4G/500GB VAIO)
Recently, while in the process of exploring, I got to know that around 12GB of space is showing as free space, before the windows boot partition.
I had 2 Primary partitions, and 2 logical partitions then, in which I have installed linux(1 NTFS, 1 EXT4).
My Partitions were like this
0-12GB-Unallocated or Free Space
2-227GB- C Drive- Windows Primary Partition
3- 211.7GB- Logical-NTFS(F Drive)
I wanted to use the 12GB also. I took 2GB from the free space for SWAP area for my Linux. (My hard disk is 500GB) and then it looked like this
0-2GB- SWAP area,(primary)
1-10GB-Unallocated or Free Space
3-227GB- C Drive- Windows Primary Partition
4- 211.7GB- Logical-NTFS(F Drive)
Since I already had 3 Primary Partition, I could not use that 10GB as another partition.
So I decided to test the partition moving with Gparted in live cd, and I shrunk the C-Drive(Windows OS) to free 120 GB from it, and made it a logical partition.
I deleted SWAP(2GB), and windows boot partition(took an image of it before doing so).
It was an attempt to recreate the same at the beginning of the disk, so that the free space becomes adjacent to CDrive.. I managed to recreate the boot partition..
But while the CDrive was extending, I happened to cancel it, and then the volume turned out to be 'unknown file system'..
Again, I tried to load windows recovery with CD, but nothing actually happened, tried many recovery methods, atleast to see my windows volume recognized as NTFS..
I tried with test disk, in the process, I messed up with Linux too, but somehow managed to get it back..
My Linux is fine, and my extended logical partition(F) is working fine..
My partition table looks like this:
dev/sda1 * 2048 206847 102400 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda2 23709696 23914495 102400 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda3 23914496 271128560 123607032+ 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda4 271129005 976784129 352827562+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 504643584 918048767 206702592 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda6 918050816 976771071 29360128 83 Linux
Other than that, i cannot do anything with my my disk now.. I managed to format unrecoginized volume, (it was a corrupt filesystem)
I attach screen shot of everything. plz plz help me..
Well since you have erased everything and got the partition table corrupted, you have to remove the partition table and create a new one, then you'll be able to create partitions. Use a live CD with gparted to do the job.
I havnt erased everything.. I have my linux partition working right, and one more windows partition.. please check this screen shot. I want to recover my data in Cdrive, its very important for me. :-(
Oh you got me confused there. The last picture in 1st post shows no partitions, so you didn't applied that I got it.
Ok then if the partition still there and not erased you can mount the partition from Linux and copy the important data to a different partition. If you can mount it and see the files you are good. If not, if it looks empty then you'll need some data recovering tool.
You might have noticed there are 4 extra volumes other than linux and active windows partitions...( please check this image attached)
I am not able to use that free space.. I get an error when ever I try to modify them.
I want to leave my last two partitions untouched, able to recover data from Cdrive, and get other partitions right.. please advise..
Well the most important is your data, save it on a different drive if you have. Something is messed up there, would be a good idea to wipe everything, remake the partition table, then the partitions in a proper way, then reinstall the system.
Ifyou have a valid wins key you can download the installation disk or windows 7 upgrade disk & do a repair installation.
