Copying big files in RAID5 will stall system

Not sure if this is a hardware problem or an OS problem, or both.

Code:
My machine spec:
Ubuntu 6.10
Pentium 3 600MHz
512MB RAM (PC133)
40GB (software RAID 1 - IDE)
1TB (software RAID 5 - SATA I 3x500GB with 1 Rosewill Silicon Image PCI 4-SATA ports)
Nvidia vga card 64MB
When I copy multiple files to my RAID5, it will eventually stall up the whole system. I then have to do a hard reboot. I also notice that my memory gets used up and it ends up using swap memory.

What could be the problem? SATA control card?

After doing some googling, it seems that Software RAID5 is unstable with Debian/Ubuntu. Like others out there, I did a physical check on my drives along with a memory test and everything is fine. Looks like I will need to invest in a RAID5 hardware controller.
