Cool Processor motherboard combination. Altering speeds to alter temp?
 

Hi,

Main aim, reduce noise.
Method, take out fan.
Victim, CPU fan.
Motherboard, GA-7ZM
CPU, choice of (all AMD socket A):
1000MHz Athlon 200 bus speed.
1800+ AthlonXP 266 bus speed.
2000+ AthlonXP 266 bus speed.

If I whack in the 2000+ and whack the front side bus on the motherboard down to 95 (lowest it will go. 95*2 190 bus speed I presume) what speed will the CPU run at? and will it run cool enough to do without a fan providing I have a dirty great heat sink? (random site says it will take temp range of 0-90 oC) Or will it go bang? or will it melt? Would there be a better combination? (I'm led to believe, if you run a faster processor and a lower speed, it will run cooler and prolong life)

Any ideas?

(server machineish, managed mostly with a 400MHz K6 previous, but since then has had upgrades)

You should ask these questions on http://www.silentpcreview.com/. They have lots of experience with undervolting and underclocking processors in the pursuit of noise reduction.

The effectiveness of cooling depends on many other important factors, like what the heatsink is, what the fans are, the case you're using (airflow is a massive factor), and what components there are (in particular, the PSU has a fan which is pulling air outside the case--sometimes it's the only exhaust fan).
