Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Converting VHS to DVD, should I use a tv tuner card or

Currently doing research on converting a bunch of VHS tapes to DVD (MPG2).

I am not to terribly familiar with tv tuner cards or hardware that will assist in the project.

My first question, is it better to use a tv tuner card or say a piece of hardware? Such as a usb device with s video out on this, say like this: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/produc..._usblive2.html

I did find Linux TV website that listed various video cards

http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Ha...ce_Information

Is there anything special I should look at then looking at getting a card?

I will try to use an older 32-bit system that has 3 GB of RAM and 500 GB of HD storage and install Ubuntu or Ubuntu Studio as the OS.

Still in the process of getting a vcr too, however I did find this handy website:

thanks

at this point it is more along the lines of
what can your 1980's vhs player do ?

was it a $8,000 supper PRO!! thing
or a cheep $50 tv antenna out (double copper wire you screw into the antenna)
if a high-end one it might have "supperVHS out "

I agree that you need to match the capabilities of the VCR with that of the capture device. Stick to analog inputs, you do not want to use a RF signal i.e. VCR outputs on TV channel 3 or 4 (analog US broadcast TV) if at all possible.

I will guess that most TV tuner cards also have analog inputs so as long as the device is supported either one will work.

Great info, thanks.

As I make progress, I will report back my results.

Contacted Hauppauge directly and they recommended the following cards:

WinTV-PVR-USB2
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.ph...WinTV-PVR-USB2

WinTV-HVR-4000
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.ph...WinTV-HVR-4000

Which, according to linuxtv, they are both supported and drivers available.

Was wondering if anyone has personal experience with either card.

thanks
