Converting new HP laptop to Linux - any success?
Hi people,
I had a post before about the best computers for conversion from Win to Linux, but this is a more specific question. I want to buy a new HP laptop and convert it to Linux. I've always had good results converting older HP laptops to Linux, but I'm wondering if there are any issues with brand new HP laptops? Are there any models to recommend? To avoid? Have people had success?
Thanks,
Euc.

If you wish maximum ease of use, avoid any model that includes an NVidia GPU, especially if it also includes an AMD or Intel iGPU. Also employ the general rule to avoid any model that employs components first introduced to market less than 6-9 months prior to the release of the distro you expect to use. It takes a while for mature support to appear in Linux kernel & drivers for new products.

Here's information on thousands of HP notebooks:
https://linux-hardware.org/?view=computers&type=Notebook&vendor=Hewlett-Packard
The pie chart suggests Pavilion and EliteBook are popular choices, but you can search for specific models and see what Linux OSes people are currently running on them, along with the individual pieces of hardware that are known to work (or not) for that individual instance.

Eucalyp333,
In the UK I run an earlier version of this HP 250 with Linux Mint without any problems.

here's output of my laptop : https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=01f7a198c5 a very budget HP laptop . I got it with Windows 10 on it. It had 100MB of an EFI partition i.e it is uefi ; if your only going to have one linux OS or maybe 2 100mb is Ok , so you can leave that partition. Image is screenshot of gparted- i'm running Arch quite frugally with timeshift on an Sd card

Getting Linux to run on HP Laptops is not an issue. The issue is when you have a hardware failure as HP Laptops are throwaways from my own personal experience with the HP Laptop that I paid a lot of money to get when the HDD failed after 6 years. There was no way to replace the HDD on it. That's why I will never purchase another HP Laptop. I have had good results with Acer Laptops which my current one I upgraded easily the 500GB HDD to a 1TB SDD because Acer's are engineered correctly so you can work on them.

I always recommend matured hardware for Linux installation - give Linux developers time to catch up. Less than a year, nowadays.

Great point. Please check https://www.ifixit.com/laptop-repairability before buying.
Also you would be interested in refurbished laptops with year warantee. It is environment friendly.
