Controller failure on USB storage device

I have 120 GB Maxtor One Touch storage device that I mount manually on my Mandriva 2006 box. The device or the controller as it seems starts to fail after a while. It can run for days or even weeks sometimes without a problem but then the connection fails. The device can neither be unmounted or mounted again until the whole Linux system is rebooted, which brings the device back online without errors. No problems where found when I ran a file system check.

I get a "mount busy"-error if I try to unmount the device during one of these failure. When I occasionally succeed in unmounting the device then I can not mount it again. I get a bad superblock error or something similar. I have to reboot the entire system before it works again.

I have had this problem for some time (couple of month) but now I really want to uncover the source of the error since it has started to annoy me pretty much. If anyone knows about a possible solution to the problem then I would really appreciate if you would share it with me.

Thanks.

This is likely a disk read error where the disk is overheating and then drops itself in an attempt not to fry. But doing this without unmounting causes issues even in Windows. Try keeping that drive with better ventalation, keeping it cooler, and see if the frequency of this drops.

I would also say, with these kinds of problems, you want to watch what you store on that drive without making backups...
