Question Connexant Modem RS56/SP-PCI

I Just Installed suse 7.2 with Kernel version 2.4.4-4GB Everthing is fine except the modem .. I need assistance on this one. Its Connexant modem with Rockwell chipset RS56/SP-PCI in com3 which is /dev/tty2. I tried wvdial to configure it..It comes up with no modem present ..I even tried to use KPPP . That's too derived me the same problem then i try to issue the following command to get the serial port details

setserial -bg /dev/ttys* --- It came up with

/dev/ttys0: Input/Output Error

this error came for all till /dev/ttysf.

i tried lspci -vv and i got the following information about the modem

00:0d.0 Non-VGA unclassified device: Rockwell International HCF 56k V90 FaxModem (rev 01)
Subsystem: Rockwell International Conexant SoftK56 Speakerphone Modem
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B-
Status: Cap+ 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR-
Latency: 32
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 11
Region 0: Memory at e5800000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Region 1: I/O ports at 9400 [size=8]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2
Flags: PMEClk- DSI+ D1+ D2+ AuxCurrent=0mA PME(D0+,D1+,D2+,D3hot+,D3cold-)
Status: D0 PME-Enable+ DSel=0 DScale=0 PME+

I think ususally modem's irq would be 5 so i try to list out my interrupts.. and i got the below

CPU0
0: 293205 XT-PIC timer
1: 10438 XT-PIC keyboard
2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
6: 81 XT-PIC floppy
8: 2 XT-PIC rtc
9: 10 XT-PIC usb-ohci, usb-ohci
10: 6791 XT-PIC eth0
12: 27090 XT-PIC PS/2 Mouse
14: 25070 XT-PIC ide0
15: 16 XT-PIC ide1
NMI: 0
ERR: 0
MIS: 0

neither 5 nor 11 was used as i see some irq information in the previous message..

I don't know where to go from here.. could anybody help me out to sort the problem.

Is there any way to set it manually and run..

afaik rockwell chipset modems don't work with Linux except in extremely rare cases. You could try a Lucent chipset modem, or better yet, an external modem.

I got a similar message when I tried to make my modem (Diamondmax Supra something-or-other, I haven't opened the box to look for a while) function under Linux and I still couldn't get it to go.

you just need its driver and your modem is ready to use.
download and install driver according to your kernel and distribution from
http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv
and then your modem will be accesible at /dev/ttySHCF0
i am using same chipset. if you will search the forum you will see a lot of threads regarding this.

you might also consider an upgrade to your kernel, your running a pretty old one.
