Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

connecting to internet

I have a compaq presario which I installed a new hard drive into. It is the only hard drive. Windows is not installed. I installed xandros 3.0 without a problem. I used the internet wizard to try to connect to the internet (I only have a dialup connection). The modem has been detected and I completed the property questions in the wizard. When I try connecting I get a message saying timed out after 10 seconds. Juno which is my isp has a linux version which I tried installing but it fails because it's trying to access the internet to update xandros files. I am also a newbie. This is my first experience with linux. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Can't say for Xandros, never used it, but if your ISP has a linux version, and you're not getting anywhere, it could be because you are not logged in as root when installing or when the package tries to upgrade the xandros files that you mention. It seems that it's pretty normal for installing/updating type functions only to be done by the root account, not the user.

So I'd suggest try logging in as root and then install the ISP stuff.

regards

John
