Question Connecting printer through router

Could someone tell me if there is a way to get a HP Deskjet F2420 all in one printer to start working when connected to a USB port in wireless router ASUS WL-500gP V2? The hardware store guy said it will work, I believed him but cannot figure out what to do to really make it functional. Shall I return the thing...?

No.

Make it work. It is probably simple.

But you do not give us any links to its manufacturer's website, specifications, data sheet or manuals. What the hell is a "ASUS WL-500gP V2" anyway?

Do you expect us to look up these details for ourselves, and then help you?

Please help us to help you: Post some links.

If you have HPLIP installed, start the HP Toolbox (if it's not in your menu, you can start it from the command line with hp-toolbox) and see whether it detects it.

If you don't have hplip installed, it's in the Ubuntu repos.

And a very good morning to you too!

This ASUS is a wireless router:

A router is a device that forwards data packets across computer networks. Routers perform the data "traffic directing" functions on the Internet. A router is a microprocessor-controlled device that is connected to two or more data lines from different networks. When a data packet comes in on one of the lines, the router reads the address information in the packet to determine its ultimate destination. Then, using information in its routing table, it directs the packet to the next network on its journey. A data packet is typically passed from router to router through the networks of the Internet until it gets to its destination computer. Routers also perform other tasks such as translating the data transmission protocol of the packet to the appropriate protocol of the next network, and preventing unauthorized access to a network by the use of a firewall.[1]
The most familiar type of routers are home and small office routers that simply pass data, such as web pages and email, between the home computers and the owner's cable or DSL modem, which connects to the Internet (ISP). However more sophisticated routers range from enterprise routers, which connect large business or ISP networks up to the powerful core routers that forward data at high speed along the optical fiber lines of the Internet backbone. (source: WIKIPEDIA).

This ASUS router is made in Taiwan and sold all over the world except GB, apparently. So sorry about that!

And now to Eddy1 who seems to be a little more serious about this:

usbip gave me this:

** (process:2871): WARNING **: running non-root?
Usage: usbip [options]
-a, --attach [host] [bus_id]
Attach a remote USB device.

-x, --attachall [host]
Attach all remote USB devices on the specific host.

-d, --detach [ports]
Detach an imported USB device.

-l, --list [hosts]
List exported USB devices.

-p, --port
List virtual USB port status.

-D, --debug
Print debugging information.

-v, --version
Show version.

-h, --help
Print this help.

What shall I do with this information?

And HPLIP is not doing any good...

I must aplogize as I haven't done this yet was researching as to how I can get mine working also.
But I will take a guess that now that you have usbip installed you may want to
lsusb
and see if the printer is detected connected to the router.
Also frankbell made a point to but there is a point in the hplip toolbox where you are going to need usb device location, which may be usbip address.
frankbell & tredegar actually give excellent advice & may be able to assist you better.

Another guess would be that the usbip is necessary & if you can detect printer, you'd probably want to attach

I also believe after reading tredegar's post that he's just saying when it comes to linux anythings possible.
I told friends that I was using linux they said you can't do this & that in linux, but now they're looking and saying different now. You don't return things you make them work especially since nothing is supposed to work in linux.

Have you read the manual? This must be setup at the router first before any attached devices will be able to use it.

In the interest of helping.... I used Google and found the router manual (two of them to be exact).

http://www.asus.com/Networks/WiFi_Ne...ng/WL500gP_V2/

From one manual on page 27.
Quote:
Installing USB printer
Plug your USB printer to the USB2.0 port on WL-500gP V2 rear
panel. To verify whether your printer is properly installed and to
WL-500gP V2 Wireless router, click Status & Log -> Status. If
Printer Model is correct and Printer Status is On-Line, you can
share this printer within your LAN.
Both manuals state to use LPR protocol with the router being the LPRServer.

Once you are sure your printer is recognized by the router, then you should be able to install it in Ubuntu.

chrisretusn,
Thanks for the link to the manual.

teboil12,
Once you have plugged your printer in, and the router has recognised it, cups should find it at LAN.IP.OF.ROUTER:9100

The connection method you should choose is HPAppSocket / jetDirect

I have to try tredegar's solution make it work.
I could do it through wins group but not desired solution.
My router uses shareport which isn't ported to linux.
