connect to internet
Hi everyone, Linux newbie, also, I have Pclinuxos .93. I have installed it on my harddrive, which is partitioned and also running WindowsXP. I have an older alcatel speed touch USB modem speed with no ethernet port, and running Bellsouth DSL. My system connects fine to the internet through windows xp, but can't to seem to do set up modem connection through Pclinuxos. I keep reading about ethernet connections, and have neither ethernet card or router. Is ethernet necessary for me to connect to the internet for any distro of linux?
If you could help, or direct me to a site that can with detailed instructions, it would be great.
Thanks.

You didn't mention which model you have but the 330 has been shown to work in .92 using steve parker's scripts - http://steve-parker.org/speedtouchconf/

Actually my modem is an older alcatel speedtouch modem. Apparently it a discontinued model, and is probably the model before the 330. It is the model that is stingray shaped.
I have just purchased a linksys router, but not even sure how to connect the modem to the router as the modem is USB with no ethernet connection.

Ah, can't be done - you need modem/router combined I'm afraid.

My apologies for not being clearer. I did get a linksys etherfast cable/dsl router with ethernet cable, but not sure how the speedtouch modem would hook up to the router as it is a usb connection. Does the router serve as a modem as well?

Yes that's right, you won't need modem as well. Check manual for how to configure it, probably through a web browser at http://192.168.1.1
