Configuring problem with PCTEL Micromodem

Hi all,

I am having problem with configuring PCTEL Micromodem. i have followed following link at:

http://howtos.linuxbroker.com/howtor...em-Config.html

I was stuck on one point. Here is the biggest problem.

When i try to configure PCTEL Micromodem as per this document. in section :5.1. Installing the 2.2x drivers.:
--------------------------------------------------------
one line is there call :
bash$ cd pctel/There is an (install.sh) installation script that makes the job easierfrom now on.Make this script executable with the command
--------------------------------------------------------
I have downloaded same tar.gz file from following path:

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pctel-linux/ and try with above sugggestion. but

unfortunately there is no file called: install.sh.

But there is one file called: install-sh, I tried to make as shell script and try to run but it says:

[root@mail pctel-0.9.6]# ./install-sh

install: no input file specified

[root@mail pctel-0.9.6]#

Here is list of all files under pctel-0.9.6 folder:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[root@mail pctel-0.9.6]# ls -l

Yes, download a newer driver (0.9.7-9) instead of the 0.9.6 you're using .The new one has an automated installation script. Is pretty easy to intall

Thanks RockmanExe,

First of all i am trying to configure this modem under Fedora core 1. i should menion here, it might help to any one to suggest me better answer.

I download it, and followed all instructions as following link with this section: 5.2. Installing the pctel-0.9.6 driver.

http://howtos.linuxbroker.com/howtor...em-Config.html

it is worth to install with pctel-0.9.6 driver instrautions? and i makred there is no driver installtion instructiosn for 'pctel-0.9.7 driver.' i do not why?

Here is the steps i followed, [i select pctel789 bec'z when i try with [-auto]option it show my with this:detecting your modem...found. Your modem is a pct789 type modem.

Well,, i see that you are under the 'src' folder included into the driver file. 'cd' back to the pctel-0.9.7-9 folder and run the setup script: (./setup) it would install everything automatically. After the installation process is over, you can do 'insmod' to both modules (pctel and ptserial)

And after everything is installed, configure kppp, setting the 'device' tab to /dev/modem.

Hope this helps.

Indeed, you ran red hat's setup utility, and it's strange that ./setup does nothing. check the readme file, it has detailed instructions, wich are almost the same you were doing

cat README

the file says this:

PCTEL Driver for Linux Version 0.9.7-9

1. Installation
===============

1.1 Automatic installation (for beginners)
------------------------------------------
- you must be root
- you must have installed a c compiler and development tools like
make, perl, ...
- you must have lspci in a standard path (for automated install)
- you must have installed your kernel sources, which corresponds
to your current running kernel

a) tar zxvf pctel-version.tar.gz

b) cd pctel/

c) ./setup

If everything was ok, you will see the message "installation done" at the
end of the output.

1.2 Manual installation (for experts)
-------------------------------------
- you must be root
- you must have installed a c compiler and development tools like
make, perl, ...
- you must have installed your kernel sources, which corresponds
to your current running kernel

a) tar zxvf pctel-version.tar.gz

b) cd pctel/src/

c) ./configure

d) make

e) make install

2. Try your driver
==================
just to try out, if your driver works:
insmod pctel
insmod ptserial

or
insmod -f pctel
insmod -f ptserial

-f means "force", which means, it will force loading the driver, even
with warnings.

then, look at
lsmod
it should print pctel and ptserial.

Good luck

Hmmm i don't know what could be causing that error. I've installed a couple pctel modems without problems yet, using this new driver, maybe you're missing some development library or program?? check 'configure.log' and 'makefile.log' files and see if they say something uselful about it

hi
hitesh..

this driver sits in perfectly on RED HAT 9..
but with FEDORA its says "compilation error".

i am also having same problems-so switched over to RED HAT 9.
with RED HAT 9 the PCTEL HSP56 MICROMODEM works perfectly..

and i use kppp for dialing..

i am on RH9 and kppp right now..
-----------
Note: this driver on RED HAT 9 is not a permanent driver..everytime you start the PC you have do the procedure as giving in the driver read me file..

Hi explosive:
thanks for shedding some light on this fedora-pctel issue.

About your question, there's a quite good solution for loading pctel and ptserial modules at startup:

edit (as root) /etc/rc.d/rc.local file
and in the end or wherever you want add some lines like this

#loading pctel modules
insmod -qsf pctel
insmod -qsf ptserial

it works like magic
