After some more research, I found in an old slashdot article that the SuSE media players shipped are crippled for legal reasons, so I have to reinstall them from a different source so that they have the codec
Thanks for all of your help and patience, nadroj.
I had to set YaST to use a different source for the files and reinstall kaffeine.
