Modem
Where did you get the drivers? You sure it's a conaxent modem? I recall there were some chips that were mis-labeled or such.

U r really short on details.But stilll i think i can help, if u r using rh ppp dialer or rp3 then configure the file /etc/wvdial.conf
make it look like this
[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = [serial port where u have connected ur modem]
Baud = 115200
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 S11=55 +FCLASS=0
Init3 = AT+IFC=2,2;Bx3
Phone =
Username =
Password =
where u know what phone ,username and password mean
BETTER STILL run wvdialconf and let it create the file for u then edit and add the Init strings.
I hope this helps

As others have said, you need to provide more information about :
What OS your running: (Redhat; mandrake; gentoo, debian...?)
What version and kernel:
What model of modem:
What manufacture:
What chip set on the modem:
What have you tried so far to get it running:
I think you get the picture. You will find that most of those cards are soft modems or what are commonly referred to as winmodems. While support has appeared for some to run on linux, many do not. In the long run you are better off spending money on a serial modem,
A couple of sites that might be of help:
http://www.linmodems.org
http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

Ok ok... sorry about my lack of details...
here we go:
Linux RedHat 8.0 i686 2.4.18-14
I got a prog from linmodems.org that detected that I have a Conexant chipset with some weird Id 14f1 (attached the text file).
what is the modem's device name suppose to be?
Is Linux suppose to recognize it after I installed the RPM I downloaded for my specific modem?
How do I know if the modem is HSF or HCF?
I'm really new to all this stuff, so what I did is workning by the redhat manual which said that I should go to the Automatic internet configuration thingy, so I don't how to run commands and scripts and all sorts of stuff like that people are talking about here...
please help me... :-(
Thanks again,
Tzvika

I have the same modem. I also have the HCF model. After you install the drivers (there's a great install doc included) you can use kppp. When you set it up just have the modem set to "/dev/modem" and you should be fine. Good luck.

Tried both drivers?
Have you tried going to http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/index.html and getting RPMs of drivers for both the HCF and HSF
modems and trying one after the other?
That way you don't need to know whether you have an HCF or an HSF modem. It worked for a friend of mine.
BTW, don't forget to remove one driver before trying the other.

I have an HSF, debian 3.0 - k 2.4.18 - 686 and i've installed correctly the source package ( no error or warnings at least ) the drivers. But my problem is that the authentication fails after i log in ( but i suppose it's a configuration error ).
p.s. my modem, with lspci is recognized as hcf, but i opened the case and it's an HSF...

There are generic drivers at conexant.com you can use. I didn't know of an rpm package.
