Computer won't start

Hi everyone. I recently assembled a computer and installed it with Fedora 9. However, on mounting it onto a system unit casing thereafter, it could not start. What might be causing this problem? Thank you.

Could you describe the steps it goes through in the boot process before it stops? What error messages are you getting?

The computer hardly responds. The processor fan makes a few revolutions then comes to a halt. Thats all that happens when the board is inserted into its casing.

have you tried resetting the bios? do you see the anything on the screen?

make sure all the hardware is connected properly, Memory and processor especially.

this has nothing to do with Operating System.

Hardware specifications? What is in the boxen???

Do you get anything on your monitor?

If no then what about the PSU? Matched to your hardware? Your loads for the PSU are exceeded?

You did apply heatsink with compound? If a Intel then possibly heat issue without proper HSF match. Applies to AMD!

What about motherboard stand off insulators, some people fail to use them where required.

Just shooting in the dark since you failed to provide details.

If you remove it from the case does the computer work again?
Did you make sure that all cables were reconnected properly?
Make sure the motherboard is properly install in the case.
Make sure the CPU is seated properly.

If the computer does not operate properly when removed then you could of damaged the motherboard either by Static electricity or maybe damaging a trace.

Any chance you've bolted the thing directly into a brand new case without putting the brass standoffs on first?

On removing the board from the casing it works seamlessly. The board is screwed on the brass standoff. Resetting the bios does not help. Thank you dearly to those who've taken a moment to assist.

from your local pc repair shop or such (not a large chain store but one of those little shops)
see if you can scrounge a handfull of those little washers (normally orangey in colour) thst insulate yoru poard from the stdndoff..
then place one each side of the mounting hole when you mount the board,

this should stop the holes being shorted together.

Some grounding at certain plane areas on the MB is necessary. The insulator washers are used with the screw. Place the washer on the screw then the screw through the MB. Depending on your MB and standoff style either brass/steel/plastic. Yes some manufactures still use plastic standoffs. You may have to insulate at the back standoffs between the MB an standoff. This depends on the design, most new MB don't require this.

Give us the requested System, MB manufacture and hardware information this will aid us in diagnosis of the problem.

edit: the insulator washers come with your motherboard hardware packet.

i wish! my MBo came with no screws washers or anything like that,

thankfully my case had enough included for all but my 4 disk raid 5 array

Hi,

That's the kit I was speaking of. The motherboard hardware kit comes with your case either as barebones or indivdually. I'm sorry if you misunderstood me.

Did you put in TOO MANY brass standoffs on the mounting holes in the case.. ?

You issue does sound like a short. and I've had cheap cases give me problems like that before.. but if you put in a standoff where one doesn't belong (no corresponding hole in the motherboard) then that could be the cause of your short..
