computer terribly slow

Hello LQers,

I wasn't sure whether my post should go into the software or hardware section, but here it is:

The problem is that my computer (2.0 ghz P4) is running terribly slowly at just about anything. The mouse lags once CPU usage peaks, program installations are laggy... and I don't understand why. I am running Kubuntu on a self-compiled kernel. I've compiled many kernels before, most under Slackware. My feeling is that I did something wrong this time in my kernel config, making it slow. But I don't know what. I have hardware 3d working, and preemptible kernel enabled.

I suppose I can include my kernel .config, although it is a little long. I'll see if people have any ideas first.

Thanks!

Do you have a website you could host the file on? Otherwise you could post the .config file. It would be much easier to decipher your problem that way.
