Computer stalling after a while (Suse)

Hello,

Well first, letme state that Im one of the least experienced guys when it comes to Linux. That said, take it easy on me regarding missleading statements. Second, Im assuming my problem is hardware related, that's why I posted here. If I made a mistake, the thread could be moved.

Here's the story:

Like a month ago, my computer (Windows) stopped working. At first it was "ntldr" related, I fixed it but then I noticed it would go into a Blue Screen of Death. After several iterations installing Windows I noticed it would always crash at the same point: TCP/IP setup. Long story short, my onBoard NIC is damaged and it crashes my coputer everytime I plug in an ethernet cable.

(Now comes the Linux part)

Before i realized the NIC was damaged, I tried Suse Linux for a change (you know, to see if the problem was Microsoft's State-of-the-art OS, j/k). While I could complete the installation, right after like a minute or two, it just stalled. No mouse, no keyboard, no nadda. Later I installed a new NIC and managed to get Windows working. But really got interested in Linux and even with the new NIC, I keep getting the same problem. I cant say for sure wether it's NIC related or not, because in Windows' case, the problem wont happen unless I plug an Ethernet cable. In Suse it always happens (maybe it's trying to startup the device).

So, how do I go about making Suse work?

Regards,
az

disable it?

can you disable it in your bios setup. If you do neither os will bother with it and you shouldn't have a problem.

Apparently, my mobo doesnt support shutting the LAN device off. What's strange is that I just logged in to Suse and it's working. The only difference is that last time I set some tools (their icons look like the AC connectors that you plug on the wall) to not start, before it died.

Let us see how it goes.
Thanks

Nope.. It died when opening the Control Center to remove the device. I should have gotten a better mobo with the ability to shut the damn thing off.

Will try FC later.

Sounds like a software problem not a hardware problem. Try going into the BIOS and disable both video BIOS and system BIOS shadowing. Probably the NIC is writing to this area and it will crash the whole computer. Also try running memtest86 to check the RAM.

Some motherboard models uses jumpers even though its a softBIOS. Check the manual or find any labels on the motherboard.
