computer freezes when trying to access internal modem

hi guys,
the other day i decided to buy a new internal modem as my old external was very old and its performance was quite bad. i bought one based on the intel 536ep chip as it said on the box that it was compatible with linux. When trying to install the drivers off the cd on my suse 9.1 pro box, it failed because it said it only worked with 2.4 kernels and mine was 2.6. I went to the intel website to get the latest drivers, but they didn't have any that work with the 2.6 kernel yet. I did, however manage to get a driver from the suse website that supposedly works with Suse 9.1. The driver, i think, is very dodgy as whenever i try to connect to the internet or do anything with the modem, the computer instatly freezes. anyone got any advice with this?

could be an irq conflict, try moving the card to a different pci slot
