Hi all,

I have installed Xubuntu 6.06 in a PIII 8000 with an Diamond A90( S3 Savage 4) graphic card. Every time that the acceleartion 3D begins, the computer freezes after 5 seconds. i Observed the same behaviour with the Ubuntu and Xubuntu 6.06s live CDs also. However with older Ubuntu live CDs, as 5.04,or Knoppix the S3 Savage 4 graphic card is recognized properly and the 3D acceleration works nice and smoothly.
My card is well recognized by the xserver,I also tried to low down the resolution as well as dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg without any observable effect. So I think the problem should be at the Savage driver or with the kernel.
I don´t know if it will help, but I tried to install the last Savage drivers from http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/ and, after runnig sudo sh install.sh from the discompressed directory at the desktop and giving OK to all the questions, I got this result

Compiling...
ERROR: Kernel modules did not compile

The DRI drivers can not be installed without the latest kernel modules.
Installation will be aborted. See the dri.log file for information on
what went wrong.

Have sombody any idea of what can I do? Did the Savage 4 work properly for somebody at Xubuntu 6.06?

SInce I have to give tomorrow this computer to a relative who lives afr away from home, it is quite urgent.

I have related problems also.
Troubles come when using 6.x xubuntu, ubuntu, kubuntu on live or hd install.

Computer freezes (!) when using VMD protein modelling software (which uses 3D acceleration)

But, when using firefox, squares of garbage appear in the screen...
And, when using VLC player, or Totem, horizontal flashes of colour appear... inside and outside the respective windows...


No problem is present when using 5.10 ubuntu, or Mandrake 9.1 or windows.

the card is a S3 savage pro ddr 32 mb ram.

xorg.conf have minimum differences...

I saw the same problem with Knoppix 5.0 but not with Knoppix 4.0. I changed the grphic card by a Nvidia TNT. I read at( 1) that was some problems with the Savage driver. It was suposed to be solved in Edgy, but I tried to install Xubuntu 6.10 using that S3 Savage card in an PIII 450 and the computer freezes even with the start of the X server. I think that the problem is with 2.6.17 kernel.
