Computer crash hardware problem

My computer is crashing at what seems to be random times. The crash is the same in Linux and Windows. I don't know where to start trouble shooting this problem, here are some of the symptoms and my info

symptoms:
In Linux it will crash while using Kwrite or Gedit and while useing bit torrent. While it has similar crashes in windoz it rarely crashes during gaming like ut2004 or Tiger Woods 2005 also crashed during bit torrent but not during other internet use like ftp or http.

the computer

Processor: 3.06 intel pentium
Motherboard: via p4
Memory: 1gig ddr
HDD: x2 - Western digital one 120gig on 40gig
AGP Video: navidia 5500 256mb
PCI Sound: Echo Layla 20
CD Burner: Sony

If you need more info please ask.
Thanks

First place to start would be to run memtest86 (from a bootable cd or floppy) for a few hours to check the ram... Tho doesn't sound like ram if it's gaming okay...

it don't sound like thats the problem but I will try it anyways. I assume memtest86 is a Linux command.
Thanks

Memtest is a standalone app. You can get floppy images (and iso?) from www.memtest86.com and burn to a cd or floppy. AS you say, probably not it, but always the best place to start.

Power supplies can be another issue, but they usually give trouble under highest load, like gaming...

Either way memtest86 is the type of program I need. I need to start eliminating hardware one at a time, might as well start with the memory.
Thanks

ps what do you thing my power supply should be?

Ya I thought about that the only problem is I don't know what temperature it normaly is in the tower.

by the way the memtest showed an error, I will probably try some new memory when I can aford it.
