compiling 64 bit

I'm trying to put together a 64 bit linux kernel for the AMD Athlon 64 3000 I'm currently using a 32 bit one but keep getting the following error message

****@*******:~/kernel/src/linux-2.6.8$ make ARCH="x86_64"
CC scripts/mod/empty.o
cc1: error: code model `kernel' not supported in the 32 bit mode
make[2]: *** [scripts/mod/empty.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [scripts/mod] Error 2
make: *** [scripts] Error 2

please help

I think you will need to edit the makefile so that one of the compiler options is '-m64'
