compile alsa 0.5.12a under RH 8.0 ?

It it possible to compile alsa 0.5.12a under Redhat 8.0?

I tried to compile it, but make fails. I remember reading somewhere that alsa 0.512a isn't compatable with the newer gcc. Odd...

The newer alsa version 0.9.0rc6 does compile. However, the older version works better with my on-board sound.

Any ideas as to how i can compile the older alsa?
