compatible soundcards with spdif or toslink

Hello,

Much respect to this community!
I am finally ready to divorce myself from the Microsoft world.
I was wondering if anyone is using and can recommend a good sound card that plays well with the common linux flavors for novice users. IE: somewhat similar to windows. I edit a lot of live music and really don’t care too much about the analog side, but require the following:

-Digital out with support up to at least 48k. Spdif or toslink. (in would be nice but not critical)
-pci or pci express maybe usb.
-Under $100.

Also, I’d appreciate any driver advice.
Supposedly the card I have worked for some people but I was never able to make it happen.
That was an Echo Mia midi

Thank you in advance!
Bill

I think setting up Echo Mia is possible and even fun (depends how you define fun). Anyhow, here is comprehensive information how to set it up. Maybe a little daunting for a Linux newcomer, but certainly doable.

Thank you Emerson, I will get the linux box out and give this a try over the weekend.
Not buying a new card is even better!
Appreciate the help.

For pro level work you could benefit from real-time kernel and jack audio instead of pulse. Some dedicated distros are described here.
