Compatible External hard disk ..
Hi, I am planning to buy an external hard disk. For Linux OS should i consider any specifications before buying. I am afraid that after I purchase any external hard disk, if it is not detecting in Linux, it will be stupid thing. So please help me on this.
I am planning to buy this. "Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB External Hard Disk" I am new to Linux. Thank you. |
you may need usb 3.0 capable hw and kernel, but in general it should work with (almost) any distro.

Working as in "usable for usb transfer" and "usable for usb boot" are the two issues.
Almost every linux distro made can use it for storage. If you want to boot to a usb 3 then you'd need a more modern distro. Most issues come from support for motherboard usb 3 chip and have nothing to do with the usb drive. |
Even if you can't boot from it, you can boot another usb device like a stick or SDHC card and mount it as part of the boot process from the other device. I've been able to use any storage device I've had from linux. As long as I had the hardware to connect to it. Although some storage devices can be a bit quirky depending on the manufacturers choices. And some USB chipsets can be quirky, making the use of USB storage devices a bit of a risk. It should still work despite all that.

Buy an eSATA slot adaptor and a hard drive toaster, then they'll all be compatible and run at same speed as if installed internally. No special driver required; it's just a cable running to a SATA port, same as your other hard drive(s). And IMHO, Firewire is better than USB because you can daisy chain firewire drives off each other instead of needing additional ports on computer. USB seems to have won despite being inferior, however.
