Compaq random shut downs

Hi,

I have been having problems with my machine randomly shutting down when I am trying to boot. Sometimes it will even make it the whole way through the boot process and then shut down. Also, it will rapidly go up and down on its own. At first I thought I was just having a brown out with power and there wasn't enough flow of electricity running to it, but I am back at school now and it still does it.

I know this isn't a problem with Linux because it is doing the same thing with Windows. I am thinking it might be a voltage/power supply/something problem, but I don't know a whole lot about diagnosing hardware problems. Please help if you have any ideas. Thanks.

BTW-Hardware: Compaq 7000 Presario, 1 Ghz Athlon, 2 HD's 80Gb & 30Gb, SBLive Value Digital, HSP56 Micromodem

Sounds like it could be a failing power supply or overheating to me. First check if all fans are spinning as expected and if the heatsinks are fastened correctly.
