Comment: Anyone notice this?

When using WinXP on my computer, the system is always reading the hard drive and lagging (this creates a lot of noise!!!!).

But, in Linux, I've never heard my system... and the status lights never blink at all!

Do you have auto update enabled on xp? Microsoft is probably accessing your system.

With Windows, you're probably running out of memory faster and more often and Windows is using its swap file, plus its probably not buffering as efficiently so needs to get more info from the disk and so on. With Linux you're less likely to run out and more likely to have the needed info cached in RAM. When it does need to swap, it does so via the more efficient partition vs. a fragmented swap file. At least, that's my understanding.

Crappy software means one thing in the business world: Profit. Unfortunately its a necessary (sp?) evil. Thank god for Linux though, because you go to work, use a Winblows box, then come home to your ever-efficient Linux box.

There are a load of superfluous services that XP starts up by default. One of the worst is the automatic system restore service.

By following the some of steps detailed in this excellent website..

I greatly reduced random disc access and speeded up windows XT.

NB: If you want to "tweak" XP, make sure you know what you're doing.

Of course, you could always install a proper operating system........
